In what areas of your life do YOU feel most insecure, and why?

What would YOU do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Take a moment to ask yourself these thought-provoking questions that can pave the way for self-discovery and empowerment. It might be painful to reflect, but sometimes we need to ask ourselves these questions to move forward.

I’m asking these questions because, In the shadows of self-doubt, I grappled with low confidence, questioning my own capabilities. Struggling to voice my thoughts in meetings, I hesitated to venture beyond the familiar confines of a job I had held for years, feeling trapped by my own insecurities. I’m certain that as you read this, you can empathise with a time when you felt trapped, lacking the courage to pursue your deepest desires, aspirations and having the confidence to succeed.

When I bravely embarked on the journey to launch my new therapy business, I grappled with fears of failure, judgment, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead. The thought that propelled me forward the most was picturing myself at retirement, reflecting on missed opportunities. Life is fleeting, and we only have a limited time to pursue our passions. Don’t let fear hold you back from chasing your dreams, the biggest regret may come from never daring to follow your heart, especially when looking back on life’s journey.

Within this Blog, my aim is to unveil some strategies that will empower you to cultivate self-confidence and embark on the journey towards manifesting the life you’ve always wanted. Before we delve deeper into the topic of confidence, take a moment to explore some intriguing “did you know” facts that may spark some thought.

Do any of these statements strike a chord with YOU?

Do YOU find yourself different from any of these?

If so, there’s no need to worry, it’s completely normal to feel that way. Keep reading as solutions are on the way to assist you.

Let’s talk about what it means to be confident and not confident. Being confident is about believing in yourself and your abilities in a humble and secure way. It’s not about thinking you’re better than others, but having a quiet inner belief in what you can do. On the flip side, lacking confidence can lead to withdrawing socially due to feeling insecure, acting anxious or avoiding situations, and having trouble performing well at work. These struggles often come from deep-seated insecurities that affect different parts of life.

So, what are the reasons behind our lack of confidence and the presence of limiting beliefs?

Trauma: Experiences of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse can have a profound impact on our sense of self-worth. If you find yourself haunted by memories of abuse or feeling burdened or ashamed by these experiences, please get in touch.

Influence of Parenting Style: Our upbringing and the way we were treated in our family of origin can have lasting effects on us. For example, if you were constantly criticised, compared to others, or told you wouldn’t succeed by a parent or loved one, those messages may still affect you today. A parent’s struggles with mental health or substance abuse can also shape the way you see the world.

The effects of bullying or harassment: Childhood bullying can leave lasting effects on your confidence in various aspects of your life, including appearance, intelligence, and skills. Experiences of humiliation in adulthood, such as workplace harassment or being disrespected by peers, can diminish your willingness to assert yourself or pursue your goals.

Lack of support: A lack of emotional support or encouragement from family, friends, or mentors can contribute to feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.

Self-Doubt: Persistent self-doubt, negative self-talk, and a lack of self-compassion can undermine our confidence and prevent them us recognising our own worth and potential.

I understand that it can be challenging to ask for help and strive to become the best version of yourself. Just know that you are not alone in your journey, and you don’t have to go through it all by yourself. To try and assist you in getting back on course, here are a few suggestions that might aid you in making a change.

My 7 useful tips:

  • Surround yourself with individuals who uplift you. There are instances when our friends may not bring out the best in us, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s important to seek out companions who value and support you more. These individuals don’t necessarily have to be your friends, they could be family members, online acquaintances, or neighbours. Surround yourself with those who lift your spirits, nourish your soul, and elevate your self-worth.
  • Trying new things and facing challenges that make you feel uncomfortable can help you learn and grow. It can make you stronger, more confident, and open up new opportunities for you. Some ways of doing this are below:

1. Start a fun hobby you’ve never done before, like painting or dancing.
2. Practice speaking in front of others to get better at it.
3. Travel to a place you’ve never been to before.
4. Apply for a job you’re interested in, even if you’re not sure you’re fully qualified.
5. Talk to someone new to make a new friend.

  • Everyone has their imperfections and shortcomings, nobody is flawless. Embrace and love your ‘flaws’ or imperfections, as they contribute to your uniqueness. So, own it confidently! Believing in yourself is important for feeling confident. When someone gives you a compliment, just say ‘thank you’ instead of downplaying it or saying something negative.
  • Keep reminders of what you achieved: In this digital age, we always have a camera handy…so snap away! Document those unforgettable moments, and when you revisit them, you’ll appreciate all the amazing things you’ve accomplished this year!
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others in your personal and work life. Take a look at the following strategies to put an end to comparing yourself:

1. Be aware of when you start comparing and how it affects you. Remember that everyone’s journey is different.
2. Recognise your strengths and accomplishments. Focus on your progress instead of constantly measuring up to others.
3. Set achievable goals that are important to you. Concentrate on your growth rather than trying to match someone else.
4. Limit your time on social media, as it can create unrealistic comparisons.
5. Practice gratitude for what you have. Shift your focus from what you lack to what you are grateful for.
6. Celebrate the successes of others rather than feeling envious. Cultivate a positive and supportive mindset.
7. Focus on self-improvement and personal growth. Invest in activities that promote your well-being and development. Explore the book you’ve always wanted to read or listen to that intriguing podcast. Find the time, as we all have it hidden somewhere in our schedules.
8. Use others as inspiration, not as a comparison point. Learn from their experiences to motivate your own aspirations.

  • Take care of your body: Taking care of yourself is key to feeling more confident. When you practice self-care, you’re doing something good for your mind, body, and spirit, which can naturally boost your confidence. Taking care of your body means looking after all aspects of your well-being. This includes eating nutritious foods, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, maintaining good hygiene, managing stress effectively, and scheduling regular check-ups with your doctor. By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you can support your body in functioning at its best and promoting overall health and wellness in the long run.
  • Talk to your self in a positive way: Negative self-talk has the potential to restrict your capabilities and diminish your self-assurance by convincing your subconscious mind that certain tasks are beyond your reach or too challenging for you to attempt. Adopting an optimistic self-talk approach can nurture self-compassion, enabling you to conquer self-doubt and embrace new opportunities. When you catch yourself thinking that you lack the confidence to speak up in a meeting or that you are not in good enough shape to exercise, remember that your thoughts are not always accurate, and you are not your thoughts. Challenge these negative thoughts and transform them into more positive self-talk to boost your self-esteem. Below are a few examples of how you can combat self-talk and reframe your mindset towards a more positive outlook, enhancing your self-confidence:

1. “I always mess things up.” to “I am capable of learning from my mistakes and improving.”
2. “I’m not good enough.” to “I am worthy of love and respect.”
3. “I’ll never achieve my goals.” to “I have the ability to overcome challenges and reach my goals.”
4. “I’m a failure.” to “I can turn setbacks into opportunities to learn from.”
5. “Nobody likes me.” to “I have valuable qualities that attract positive people into my life.”
6. “I’m so stupid.” to “I am intelligent and capable of solving problems.”
7. “I’ll never be successful.” to “I am on the path to success and each step forward is a victory.”

I’m sure there are numerous additional ways to expand on these 7 steps. Please don’t hesitate to share your own tips in the comments section for both myself and others to benefit from.
