Why should you dive into this blog? It’s your gateway to uncovering valuable insights about how being self-aware and focusing inward can truly enhance your daily life.
Why did I decide to write about this? Why now? It’s been on my mind for years, as I’ve learned to observe myself from a different perspective, like a bird soaring overhead. This self-reflection has improved my relationships and shaped me into who I am today. My hope is that by sharing this with you, it can help you create a better future for yourself!
I discovered a quote on Google that perfectly illustrates why self-awareness is crucial.
Alan Mullaly, for example, the CEO who famously brought Ford back from the brink of bankruptcy, credits self-awareness as “the single greatest opportunity for continued growth, performance and improvement.”
First of all, exactly what is self-awareness?
Self-awareness involves being in tune with your thoughts, emotions, and actions. When you’re self-aware, you can recognise, interpret, and understand the reasons behind your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. To enhance your self-awareness, it’s crucial to delve into the reasons behind your thoughts, feelings, and actions rather than just acknowledging the emotions you go through. Understanding ourselves is a vital daily practice that empowers us to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace and positivity. It involves actively listening, engaging with others, and mastering our emotions to respond thoughtfully in the moment.
Have you experienced the annoyance of drivers not using their turn signals or encountering inconsiderate behaviour in supermarket aisles? It can be quite frustrating, can’t it? Witnessing individuals who lack self-awareness can be irritating, or it could be that they just don’t prioritise courtesy like you do. In fact, research shows that only 10-15% of people actually fit the criteria for self-awareness according to a Harvard business study. In various other scenarios, when faced with unfavourable feedback, you may find yourself blaming others, overlooking your own errors, lacking focus, struggling to listen, seeking short-term happiness, and fixating on the negatives. It’s common to feel frustrated and overlook our own lack of self-awareness. The key is to prioritise our own actions and interactions rather than being consumed by the behaviour of others. By honing our self-awareness, we not only enhance our own experiences but also contribute to creating a more harmonious and mindful environment in the world around us.
Discovering who we really are is now a big deal in the working world and in our personal lives. Research shows online that when we understand ourselves better, we feel surer of ourselves and come up with more creative ideas. This helps us make smarter choices, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively. We’re also less likely to do dishonest things. Understanding ourselves enhances our job performance, boosts our opportunities for advancement, and strengthens our leadership skills, resulting in happier employees, thriving companies, and improved personal relationships.
Discovering self-awareness is like exploring two different roads, each offering a special view. In my online research, I found these two essential forms of self-awareness.
The first, called internal self-awareness, helps us understand our values, dreams, reactions, strengths, weaknesses, and how we affect others. It’s like a key to more job happiness, better relationships, personal strength, and joy, while easing anxiety and stress.
The second, external self-awareness, is about seeing ourselves through the eyes of others in the same way. Understanding how others see us can boost our compassion and ability to understand their perspective. Leaders who grasp how their employees see them tend to build stronger bonds, increase satisfaction, and perform better as a team.
What advantages does self-awareness bring?
- Improved relationships: Understanding your own emotions, reactions, and behaviours can lead to better communication and stronger connections with others.
- Enhanced decision-making: Being self-aware helps you make more informed and thoughtful choices in various aspects of life.
- Increased emotional intelligence: Recognising and managing your emotions can contribute to better emotional intelligence, leading to more effective interactions with others.
- Personal growth: Self-awareness is key to self-improvement and personal development, paving the way for continuous growth and learning.

Lacking self-awareness can harm your well-being, relationships, and career in significant ways as detailed below.
- Inner confusion: Not being in touch with your thoughts and emotions can lead to feeling overwhelmed and losing control over your responses. This may result in acting impulsively based on every passing feeling, creating harmful habits and impacting your mental health.
- Relationship challenges: A lack of self-awareness can manifest in relationships through a lack of understanding, empathy, and sensitivity towards others’ needs. Engaging in thoughtless or hurtful behaviours without realising it can lead to conflicts and negative perceptions from others.
- Impact on work: Maintaining a successful professional life is challenging without self-awareness. Collaboration, empathy, and teamwork suffer when individuals are unaware of their actions. Leaders may struggle with distorted perspectives and overconfidence, hindering their ability to evaluate their leadership skills effectively. Seeking feedback can greatly enhance self-awareness and leadership effectiveness.
What approaches can you embrace to nurture your self-awareness?
Firstly, notice how you respond in different situations. Recognising your emotional reactions, especially during tough times, offers valuable insights into your triggers. Stay authentic to yourself as you go through this journey. While it’s common to justify things, there are times when being truthful with yourself is crucial. Whether it’s in a professional or personal context, reflecting on your identity and owning up to your actions are essential aspects of self-awareness.
Below are some more useful tips to develop self-awareness.
- Embrace curiosity about yourself and your journey with others. The depths you reach in understanding who you are depend on your willingness to explore and embrace new experiences.
- Open up and release judgment, allowing yourself to break down walls and let go of defences. By approaching yourself with openness and a readiness to learn, you can uncover aspects of yourself that may surprise you. Part of self-awareness is understanding your limitations and your strengths.
- Keep a diary to track what sparks positive emotions and practice mindfulness in everyday life. Keeping a diary can greatly enhance your self-awareness. For instance, if you’ve made a decision that didn’t produce the expected results, referring back to your diary entries allows you to revisit your mindset when making that decision. The process of journaling can bring clarity to your thoughts, helping you articulate your emotions and rationale. It also aids in recognising your strengths and weaknesses by reflecting on your experiences and reactions to different situations.
- Don’t hesitate to seek feedback from others about how they perceive you. Being open to differing viewpoints can offer valuable insights into your own self-awareness.
- When faced with conflict, try to see the situation from a third-person perspective. Recognise that others may have unique experiences and viewpoints, leading to different interpretations of the same event.
- Regularly check in with yourself by pausing to reflect on your current feelings and mental state. This simple practice can enhance your self-awareness in the moment.
- Stay receptive to continuous learning and growth, as each experience offers new revelations about yourself.
- Reflect on how your learning can benefit you and consider what additional steps you need to take to further your personal growth and self-awareness.
